    Victoria

Every gate on the Victorian path. One place.

From SEAL and select-entry to the VCE and ATAR, SmartPrep maps your child's Victorian journey and surfaces the decisions — years ahead — that decide it.

Built for the VCAA study designs and the VTAC ATAR. Not a generic national app.

    The Victoria journey

Build the Foundation · Primary (K–6)

Reading, writing, numeracy and reasoning; growth tracked against NAPLAN (Years 3 & 5); and where families aim higher, preparation for SEAL selection.

    Early Streaming · Years 7–9

The quiet, decisive years — maths streaming here decides whether Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics stay open in the VCE. NAPLAN (Years 7 & 9) is the last national benchmark. Victoria is unusual: its flagship select-entry schools take students in Year 9, right in this window.

    University Placement & Selection · Years 10–12

The VCE (including the VCE Vocational Major), subject selection, and the ATAR via VTAC.

    The gates

    1. 1a

SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning) · enter Year 7

Accelerated programs in ~40 schools. Influences an accelerated cohort through secondary.

    2. 1b

      Select-Entry High Schools · enter Year 9

Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson Girls', Nossal, Suzanne Cory; exam via ACER. A selective academic environment into the VCE.

    3. 2

The Streaming Gate — the silent one · Years 9–10

The maths stream that keeps Methods/Specialist and competitive sciences open.

    4. 3

VCE Subject Selection · Years 10–11

Sets the ATAR ceiling and university prerequisites.

    5. 4

      VCE & ATAR · Years 11–12

      The certificate and the rank.

Your Victoria system, in plain terms

Certificate = VCE (incl. VCE VM), set by VCAA; rank = ATAR via VTAC; national checkpoint = NAPLAN (Yrs 3/5/7/9); selective = SEAL (Yr7) and Select-Entry High Schools (Yr9).

NAPLAN growth from Year 7 to Year 9 is the strongest measured predictor of a top ATAR — and the Year 9–10 maths stream sets the ceiling.

    Understanding the Victoria curriculum

Your school told you to "check the VCAA website." We'll just explain it — in plain English, with the actual subjects your child is choosing, and how it all fits together.

How senior works, in plain terms

The VCE runs subjects as Units 1–2 in Year 11 and Units 3–4 in Year 12. Your child studies ~20–24 units over the two years; English is compulsory. Study scores from the Unit 3–4 subjects feed the ATAR, calculated by VTAC.

    The maths your child picks

    • Foundation Mathematics · General Mathematics — Practical/applied.
    • Mathematical Methods — The calculus course; the gateway to STEM, science and commerce at university.
    • Specialist Mathematics — The most advanced (taken with Methods); scales very high. Methods/Specialist depend on the Year 9–10 advanced maths stream.

    The sciences

    • Biology (Units 1–4) — Biology is the study of living things — from a single cell to whole ecosystems, then heredity, genetics, disease and the immune system. It's content- and writing-rich rather than maths-heavy, and it's the natural science for medicine, nursing, veterinary, allied health and environmental science — usually paired with Chemistry for health pathways. In VIC it's listed simply as "Biology."
    • Chemistry — The science of matter and reactions; the de-facto medicine prerequisite; pairs with Biology (health) or Physics (engineering).
    • Physics — How the universe works; the most maths-dependent science; for engineering and the physical sciences.

    How it all links together

Methods/Specialist → engineering, science, commerce · Biology + Chemistry → medicine & health · Physics + Chemistry + Specialist → engineering · English + Literature/Economics → law & arts. Your best study scores become the ATAR via VTAC.

    Victoria questions, answered

The state system — curriculum, exams, gates and timing. How the engine, MyRa and pricing work is in our main FAQ.

Which curriculum does SmartPrep follow in Victoria?

The Victorian Curriculum and the VCAA study designs — we map the subjects, the gates and the VCE/ATAR pathway in plain English. Our calibrated practice engine leads with the shared Australian-Curriculum foundations (Years 7–10) and our NSW senior core; VCAA outcome-level tagging is expanding state by state.

Which exams and certificate does it prepare my child for?

The VCE (including the VCE Vocational Major) and the ATAR via VTAC, plus NAPLAN and Victoria's selective tests.

How does it help with selective entry?

Victoria has two pathways: SEAL (Select Entry Accelerated Learning, enter Year 7, school-run) and the four Select-Entry High Schools — Melbourne High, Mac.Robertson, Nossal, Suzanne Cory (enter Year 9, ACER exam). SmartPrep prepares for both.

What are the key decision gates, and when?

SEAL (Yr7) · Select-Entry (Yr9) · the streaming gate in Years 9–10 that keeps Mathematical Methods / Specialist open · VCE subject selection (Yr10–11) · VCE & ATAR.

How does SmartPrep make sure my child is best positioned?

We diagnose where your child stands, build each gate's skills, track the Victorian gates, protect the Methods/Specialist maths pathway, then guide VCE subject choice and prep.

Which senior subjects and scaling matter most?

Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics, plus Chemistry and Physics, are the high-leverage senior subjects — and they're gated by the Year 9–10 maths stream.

    When should we start?

Primary for SEAL. But note Victoria's flagship selective entry is Year 9, so Years 7–8 are the run-up — and the Year 9–10 maths stream is decisive regardless.

The one thing Victorian parents get wrong?

"Selective entry is in Year 7 like other states." In Victoria the flagship select-entry schools take students in Year 9 — a different runway.

Know the next gate. Before it closes.
